Many Christians don't understand what to do. Told that they could not be good enough to please God but must turn to Jesus to forgive and change them, they were then told they should act like Christians, pleasing to God. When they asked how, they were either given a flawed list of rules or left to work it out for themselves. Paul wrote that we should work out our salvation, but also that having begun by the Spirit we should not be perfected by the flesh. He expected Christians would know how to act, but opposed those who would give them rules.
