Reseña del libro "Membrane Based Led-Pd Detector for No2 and 8-Hoq Doped Sol-Gel Glass for Trace Elements: Unpublished Works - From Texas Tech to Queen's University"
The doctoral research projects, Membrane-based LED-PD Detection for Nitrogen Dioxide (1985-1988) and 8-HOQ Doped Sol-Gel Glass for Trace Elemental Analysis (1999-2001), I worked as graduate student at Texas Tech University, USA and Queen's University, Canada, respectively. In my struggles for survival in the academic arena the works left sitting in the files. I believe that the research works should see the daylight for common interests since they can shed some insight of my efforts in the field of Analytical Chemistry focused on environmental analysis. The works are relevant to the current and continued search for the simple but efficient methods for environmental analysis. Unfortunate though, it is important to mention that in the murky chaos of my unsettled career several portions of my research works were cannibalized by people whom I knew closely (see below Background Incidents). Membrane-based Scrubber: Innovative techniques for the low-cost construction of a diffusion scrubber are presented. Several critical parameters of the membrane-based scrubber technique for the determination of low concentration (sub-ppbv level) toxic nitrogen dioxide in the ambient air were evaluated. Usefulness of the method for the indoor and outdoor air sampling was demonstrated. Detail description for the construction of an innovative LED-PD flow-cell and a simple to construct voltage amplifier are presented. The low-cost method has potential uses for the determination of other toxic gases in the ambient atmosphere.Doped sol-gel glass for trace elemental analysis: A method for the preparation of 8-HOQ doped sol-gel glasses (8-HOQ-SGGs) is described. Chemically doped SGGs have the potential use for matrix separation and preconcentration of harmful trace metals in the aquatic systems. The critical problem of leaching of the doped SGGs are evaluated for the 8-HOQ-SGG and a practical solution to the problem is identified and explained. Handmade crude micro-columns packed with coarse 8-HOQ-SGG particles have been tested and compared with chemically immobilized I-8-HOQ packed in the factory made well-defined micro-columns using spectrophotometric analysis. Other possible methods for the preparation of doped sol-gel glasses are listed. Potential uses for the 8-HOQ-SGGs with sensitive detectors, such as ICP-MS, and in other areas of research are identified.
