At 16 Matt Feargal dreamed of little else but escaping his mother, her alcoholism, the incessant raiding of his stash, and the narrow confines of Dilmun. In a cafe, however, a woman wanted a spliff-and life was looking up. But... At first the signs were small and easily dismissed-the light was off, the shadow wasn't really a lope; the river broke not quite right in the moonlight, all just magical thinking. Of course there was the fox in The Wood-but that had to have been rabid. On top of all the signs and wonders there was, perhaps, the return of Zakara Botrous-his father. With this followed the rumours brought from Eastern Mexico and the Cinn-a great and continuous malignity.
